History tells us that that the ancient city of Hierapolis was situated on hot springs in traditional Phrygia in southwestern Anatolia. The city’s ruins are nearby to modern Pamukkale. The archaeological museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not too much known is about how the city originated. Some studies have suggested that the Persians or Hittites may have built the city, but there isn’t sufficient evidence to support this claim. It’s believed that during the first half of the 7th century, a temple was built by the Phrygians. This temple later went on to become the epicenter of Hierapolis, which soon became a place where doctors would use the thermal springs to treat their patients. Many are of the belief that the name Hieropolis came from the fact that the first bronze coins were minted here, while a section of people think that the city is named after the temple that was built in the honor of Hiera, the wife of Telephus, who was the son of Heracles and Auge - the Mysian princess Auge.
