About Ani

Ani got its name from Ani Kamakh, the fortress city of Armenia and Ani-Kamakh, the center of paganism. Situated in Upper Armenia’s Daranaghi, in earlier times Ani was known as Khnamk. Till date, it is unclear why this particular word was chosen. Experts of the Armenian language believe that the word may have been derived from ‘khnamel,’ the Armenian word which means ‘take care of.’ Ani is located at a geographically important site. By its eastern side lies the abyss of the Akhurian River and the western side is adorned by the Tzaghkotzadzor valley. Ani is situated between the closed borders of Armenia and Turkey.  Historians claim that Ani was known for its resplendence and beauty until it was destroyed by an earthquake in the 13th century. Soon, the city reduced to a tiny village and by the 17th century this once mesmeric city was completely abandoned. For Armenians, Ani is a symbol of religious, cultural and national heritage. It still resides as a metaphor of Armenian identity and is an everlasting source of pride for the country.
