Previously known as Camping Flats and Bealey Flats, this was a connecting route between east and west for the Maori hunting parties. Established in 1929, this major national park offers long and short hikes amidst other activities. You can reach the place by road or rail. However, the journey in the TranzAlpine Express is a must-experience as it guarantees to be one of the scenic train journeys ever. Be glued to the windows as the train winds its way through the mountain pass along the Waimakariri river. The national park’s rugged and mountainous terrain is perfect for trampers with reasonable experience. It is not recommended for those who have little or no experience as its tracks and facilities are not well-developed. There a number of other activities for you to make the most of your visit.
If you are up for a challenge, opt for mountain biking where you can cycle through the incredible mountainous scenery. Keep an eye out for Kia parrots pecking at your bike. Looking for something more adventurous? Try the Temple Basin ski field among the snowy mountains. For the less physical types, there are short walks to explore the national park. Choose from the various short and long walking tracks available to experience the alpine vegetation, waterfalls and the stunning scenery.
