About Nidaros Cathedral

The best known and most important landmark of the city of Trondheim, Nidaros Cathedral is a must-visit. Boasting of being the Northern-most medieval cathedral in the world, it is a magnificent gothic monument. The Church is located in the city centre and is visible from almost everywhere in the city. Another interesting fact about the church is that it is the second largest in Scandinavia. Need more reasons to visit? A superb example of gothic architecture, the construction of this monument is believed to have begun in 1070! The Church also hosts Olav’ Wake in the memory of King Olav II. It is, in fact, built on the king’s burial site. He was later canonised and became the patron saint of Norway.  A great place to explore Norway’s past!

How to reach

It is 0.9 k.m away from the city center.

You can reach there easily by walk. It is at a walkable distance from the city center.

Tips

  • No pictures are allowed inside the cathedral
  • Find out when there's a tour in your language (you can check on the web), and plan your visit around that.
  • There's a tour of the tower that was very nice, but there's a separate fee/ticket needed.
  • Make sure you're ready to climb a good number of steep, narrow stairs, and this is not for anyone who's claustrophobic, or afraid of heights. You can get up right to the base of the green pointed spire, and you can walk around taking photos.
  • Take the time to engage in conversation with the attendants at the cathedral. Some have very extensive knowledge about its history and its current objectives.
  • If you speak English but not Norwegian then you are lucky that English is spoken quite well by many Norwegians.
  • If you do not speak Norwegian, then buy the booklet for about 60 Kr.
