About Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Your journey of New Zealand without a visit to this historical site where the treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the Maori people.  This award-winning national attraction tells the story of 2 people coming together which was an important landmark of New Zealand history. Immerse yourself in the authentic cultural experience through the high-energy Maori performances. Visit Waitangi’s carving studio where you get to meet and interact with the kaiwhakairo (carvers) and learn more about the Maori art of word carving (whakairo). The contemporary brings the history of New Zealand to life with its impressive collections of taonga (treasured objects). The place behind the history is The Treaty House which was the residence of the first British of New Zealand; James Busby. He conducted much of his official business here and the Treaty of Waitangi was signed on the grounds of this house.  You also get an opportunity to sample the Maori cuisine while enjoying an evening of captivating cultural performances.

How to reach

From Paihia city centre it is hardly half an hour walk. A taxi will take hardly 5 minutes, Walking is preferred

Tips

  • Please note that the entry fee is for two days so that you can plan accordingly and see everything
  • Wear comfortable shoes as there are quite a bit of walking around
  • It is advisable to take th help of the local guide at the site
  • There is a cafe inside the complex in case you are hungry
  • Please note that lunch is served till around 2:00 p.m. 
  • You can also  go for only day pass which is highly popular amongst the visitors
  • Camera is allowed inside the complex
