Inhabited by the people of Chimu civilization approximately 600 years ago, Chan Chan was the largest city in South America. Even though this city is not inhabited by anyone now, it is listed under the UNESCO World Heritage site. In 1986, the site was named as a World Heritage site. Spread over more than 20 square kilometers, this archeologic site is one of the greatest wonders in the world. As the historic city is located in the Trujillo city of Peru, several tourists visit the site quite frequently. The most interesting part about this location is that over ten thousand structures can be seen in there. Some of the structures are more than 30 feet high.
In its hay day, more than 60,000 people inhabited Chan Chan. Even though the entire area receives immensely less rainfall, the sophisticated civilization of Chimu formed developed irrigation canals and wells to rectify the situation. Due to their immense hard-work, civilization is known as the “first true engineering in the modern world”. Around the year, 1400, the people of Chimu started abandoning Chan Chan after the conquer of the Incas. In 1532, the entire city was left empty by the local people over there. In the entire location of Chan Chan, the different categories of houses can be seen still now. Tourists visit the location to view the different rooms used by the Chimu people, including burial chambers, temples, reservoirs and others.
3 Eggs
According to Chimu belief, the sun created 3 eggs to populate the earth - gold for the rulers, silver for their wives and copper for the commoners. Well, who were the Chimu? They were the people, who lived along Peru's arid coast 600 years ago between A.D. 850 to 1470. Chan Chan is proof of their existence; an abode, a metropolis with a complex network of palaces, temples, storehouses and irrigation canals, which supplied this dry desert with enough water for its inhabitants to survive and even flourish. Today, however, it is water that threatens this city as it washes away its bricks and mortar as torrential rains inundate this part of coastal Peru. In their heydays, the Chimu people followed the strict societal hierarchy and did not believe that all men were created equal, This is a nine square mile ancient city. Amidst its maze of passageways and streets, you will find structures, some with walls that are 30 feet high. The city's palaces and temples have friezes that are a hundred feet long and elaborate in their artistry. According to hydraulic engineer, Charles Ortloff, the Chimu civilization is the ''first true engineering society in the New World". Unless you visit, you will not agree or disagree.
