About Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, Arequipa (Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, Arequipa)

There's a price we pay for our sins

On the contrary, there was a price to be paid for being cloistered away from sin in the silence of prayer; in the service of Jesus. The price was 100 gold coins in a year to be precise. These were rich and wealthy nuns of the Dominican Second Order usually from upper-class Spanish families, who chose the life they wished to live. They were put to the test in the Novice Cloister only to graduate to the Orange Cloister named after the Orange trees found on the premises. In the Profundis Room, there are nuns laid to rest; their portraits hanging on the walls. The painters were given 24 hours to paint one since sketching a nun, while alive, was unthinkable and a sin. The living quarters were sparse to opulent depending on the 'dowry', the nun brought to the monastery. Sor Ana was the nun whose predictions almost always came true. Equally confounding were the miracles she performed. The building is shaped like the Cross. Murals depict Lord Jesus and the Virgin. High stone walls make this monastery a citadel in itself. Inside is a glimpse of history you would not want to pass by.
