Sacsayhuaman was built using massive stones weighing as much as 300 tons. The Archaeological Park of Sacsayhuaman is located 3 km north of the city of Cusco (Qosqo), on the top of a mountain. It covers approximately 3,000 hectares, in which there is a rich Andean fauna and flora, llamas, kestrels, and hawks. Peru and Cusco are rich in archaeology and continue to offer visitors new discoveries. Recent searches (2009) have brought value from new findings in this area. In front of the complex, there is a group called Suchuna or "sliding". It is a natural formation of volcanic rock that emerges from the surface. To the north of the plateau, you can see the Inca throne, which is a succession of workbenches on the rock beyond the famous chincanas or tunnels. Likewise, it is the central place where June 24 of every year the famous Inti Raymi is celebrated, a festival in honour of the Sun God.

The hawk introspects in those lines written by Ted Hughes. Perhaps, the majestic bird was talking about Sacsayhuamán, which in the Quechua language means 'place where the hawk is satiated'. Indeed, they are. This place sees them soaring into the clouds content to bask in the sun or play with the winds. Down below, you will find Alpacas and Llamas and other animals keeping these winged avians merry company. Historically, Sacsayhuamán is believed to be an Inca fortress or a ceremonial center. As in Machu Picchu, the architecture testifies to the superb building capabilities of the Incas. The complex has everything from residential buildings, towers, shrines, warehouses, roads, and aqueducts. The impressive stone walls are amazing. The main wall has been constructed not straight but zigzag with giant stones. Sacsayhuamán, the greatest architectural marvel built by the Inca civilization during their apogee. And maybe, just maybe, the Incas, like the hawk did say with triumph ''Now I hold Creation in my foot''.
The distance from Cuzco city center to this destination is 2.7 km. You can walk it down in 20 minutes or take a taxi to reach in 5 minutes. Taxi fare begins from 16 SOL.
