How to reach

Komodo is Indonesian archipelago, between Sumbawa and Flores islands.

To  reach Komodo, you first need to reach Labuan Bajo by either plane or boat, and from there to Komodo Island by boat. Any trip to Komodo will start and finish in Labuan Bajo as this is the main transportation hub for the whole province and almost all the tourists fly in and out via Labuan Bajo airport  and  hence another name given to it is Komodo airport!

There are many ways to reach Komodo from Labuan Bajo

1. Join an organized tour

2. Charter a local boat

3. Take a boat ride which takes around 2 hours to get from Labuan Bajo to Komodo Island

Prices for a charter boat for 2 days can vary a lot,  but with good bargaining you should pay about 4218840 Indonesian Rupiah including food and beverage on the boat, load of beer, sodas, and water.

Tips

  • You can buy souvenirs that are way too over-priced so, be prepared to haggle a lot
  • Pack the right clothes as exploring Komodo Island will involve a lot of trekking. So pack cotton-based clothes that absorb sweat and  a comfortable pair of shoes or mountain sandals and a swimsuit
  • The weather may be very hot, so do pack your sun shades, sun screen lotion
  • Do wear a hat when trekking in the open
  • If you are inclined to take photographs, do bring your telephoto lenses, underwater camera, or even macro lenses for the wildlife
  • Always good to travel in groups as the costs will be shared
  • Komodo Islands and its nearby small islands do not have ATM machines, always have enough Indonesian currency on you
  • Remember, to be safe, avoid sudden movements while being around a komodo
  • If  by chance you get chased by a komodo, do not run straight, run in a zigzag pattern and try to get shelter at one of the staged houses in the park and remember do not climb up a tree
