Shoes on the Danube Bank is the most heart-wrenching memorial of Budapest. It is a painful reminder of a dark event in this city. This iconic memorial was conceptualized by Can Togay and Gyula Pauer to pay tribute to the Jews who were the subject of inhuman tyranny and killed by the fascist Arrow Cross militiamen at this place during World War II.
Very simple in concept, it is comprised of about 40 meters of the wall topped with cast replicas of single and pairs of shoes lying scattered at a spot where Jew men, women and children were marched to. They were told to remove their shoes and made to stand at the embankment of the river so that when they were shot, their bodies would be swept away by the river. This realistic piece of art reminds us of the history of what nationalism and hate can lead to. Do visit the place, stay awhile in silent contemplation and pay your respects.
