About Gjirokaster Castle

Situated at a height of 336 meters, this Albanian fortress was built gradually by hundreds of years of despots. It now houses tanks and planes as reminders of their victory over western occupation.

This majestic castle is a tribute to the rich Albanian history spanning over 2000 years and is one of the most visited places in Albania.  Built in the 12th century, the castle was extensively modified by Albania’s political leaders. The fortress was later converted to a prison by Zog; King of Albanians, to house members of various resisting forces. It continued to function as a prison until 1968 and was later converted into a historical site. Now it also includes a museum containing arms and ammunition used in Albania’s independence struggle.

The castle also has some entertainment to offer in the form of national folk fore festival every four years. Enjoy the traditional song and dance and many other annual festivals which happen on the roof of the castle.
