About Borough Market

Borough Market is an extraordinary marketplace in Central London that dates back to 1014 when the River Thames had but just one bridge, the London Bridge across it. In the 16th and the 17th centuries, this place became a thriving, bustling hub with the traders making this area come alive. Various amenities like pubs, theatres and many such activities of entertainment sprung up to add to its overall allure.

In time, however, with the onset of chaos, corruption, and problems of infrastructure, there was felt a need for a more organized, safe and peaceful environ which led to the formation of what we see today. The advent of the railways in the 19th century and the burgeoning population led to a railway viaduct built right through the market, making it more accessible and improving and expanding its trade and commerce. The 1970s took a turn in the negative when marketgoers turned towards the glittery and invitingly bright supermarkets. However the growth of the need for fresh food and fresh produce providers, organic food growers, bakers. cheesemakers and the like saw people once again flock into the fresh markets.

This is a fun place to be, to savor the latest food trends, catch up with friends, or just simply to give in to your gastronomic cravings. a noisy, crowded, place of humming activity full of produce, restaurants, food stalls, there is never a dull moment here. So from paella to fresh produce, oysters to sausage rolls, coffee to cheeky Pimms and prosecco, get them all at this iconic one-of-a-kind market space.
