About Peak District National Park

Peak District National Park

Welcome to an upland area of immense diversity that varies from moorland, the Dark Peak and the limestone area of the White Peak, in the southern end of the Pennines and the first national park in the United Kingdom. Its location near cities like Manchester, Sheffield, Derby, to name a few and easy access to rail and roadways attract multitudes of people. There is evidence that this place has been inhabited since the Mesolithic age with mining and agriculture being the main means of livelihood. This was followed by the start of cotton mills and quarrying. Tourism also gained momentum with all the natural abundance and the numerous heritage sites.

Owing to its sylvan and pristine beauty there are numerous cycling, rock climbing, caving and hiking trails for all those adventurously inclined. Various rare species of flora thrive in the region. Even the fauna and the bird species found here are widespread and are generalists and have a distinct and exclusive aura.

Apart from all the God-given bounty, enjoy the many stately homes, magnificent halls, grand churches, and beautiful parks. Also. not to be missed out on here are the four show caves. Eyam Museum, the National Tramway Museum, the springs at Buxton and Ashbourne add to the attractions.  People also come here for the festivals and the Peak District specialty dessert Bakewell Pudding and Stilton cheese.
