The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, built-in 1389, honours the Turkic poet who died in 1166. Construction was halted in 1405 when Timur, who ordered its construction, passed away. It is said that Timur hired professional builders and aided in the construction himself.
The architecture of the building is said to be the beginner of the Timurid style. The manner in which the vault and dome were constructed and the decorative glazed tiles started a new form of art. Thick walls, both inside and out, protect the central hall and eight rooms. The poet is interred in the burial vault found behind a door carved in ivory and wood. The other rooms are used as a library, mosque, dining room, and utility room.
The mausoleum was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.
