About Hala Sultan Tekke

An elegy for a woman

Dedicated to Umm Haram, the aunt of an associate of the Prophet, this shrine mourns her death. She fell off her mule and died here during the Arab Invasion of Cyprus. This shrine was originally believed to be a temple dedicated to Artemis. It became a shrine only in the year 1571 when Cyprus went under Ottoman rule. Today, calm and peaceful, visited by flamingoes in spring and autumn, it is a place of veneration for Muslims and tourists alike. The shrine finds its place among ancient monuments. The complex has a mosque, mausoleum, minaret, cemetery, and living quarters for men and women. The bonus is the Larnaca Salt Lake, where salt was manufactured in ancient times. After you have knelt in prayer, catch the sun gracefully descending over the placid waters of this tranquil lake.

Must See

  • The Tomb of Oum Haram

  • Larnaca Salt Lake fringed by tall palm trees
  • Historic Ruins and Gardens
