About Dar Jellouli Museum

The Dar Jellouli Museum is an art museum in a palace located in Sfax, Tunisia. The palace itself has many things. Built-in the 17th century by Muslim refugees, the house has had many lives and stood the test of time. It has been lived in by generations of military commanders, was a military headquarters, a medical clinic, and now a museum.

One will definitely want to see the central courtyard behind the modest exterior and won’t be able to stop staring at the blue and white tile work on the first and second floors.

The museum was founded in 1939 by Maghrebi art Lucien Golvin, a French university professor. The two-story museum exhibits traditional costumes, oil paintings, and Islamic calligraphy. The daily life of Sfax in the 18th century is portrayed in the hallways and in the smaller rooms. Kitchen and farming articles, woodworking, costumes, and clothing are all on display.
