Sometimes referred to as the Chimtou Museum or Chemtou Museum, the Museum and Ancient Site of Chimtou is an archaeological museum in Tunisia. Chimtou was once the Roman city of Simmithu, near a marble quarry and the Numidian Kingdom.
This fascinating small museum showcases the geological discoveries made nearby. Marble has been excavated and produced for export in the area since the second century when it was controlled by the Roman Emperors. Some of the displays include a tiara, Numidian alter façade and funeral monuments. Parts of the museum are open-air spaces so visitors can see the Roman mills and water turbines. There is also a theatre outside with seating for 200 for special presentations.
