Al-Zaytuna Mosque, Ezzitouna Mosque, or Mosque of El-Zituna, means “Mosque of Olives”. It is the oldest mosque in Tunis. The mosque is as old as the capital city itself.
Like other mosques in Tunisia, the Al-Zaytuna is a fortified building on the sea. High stone walls and defensive towers on the four corners protect the building from invaders. The mosque features 160 columns with materials brought directly from Carthage. Other materials were imported from Italy. The central courtyard is circled by a portico of stone pillars, horseshoe arches, naves, and bays.
Imagine having gone to a school with a 1,000-year history. The Al-Zaytuna Mosque was also a university. Many of the greatest Islamic scholars have graduated and taught here.
