About Bardo National Museum

The Bardo National Museum, named after the city it is located in, is located in an old palace. It displays Tunisian history across the ages and civilizations. It is considered one of the most important museums in Africa.

The museum is best known for its collection of Roman mosaics, collected from around Tunisia in Carthage, Dougga, and others. The Virgil Mosaic is especially touted as providing insight into ordinary life in Roman Africa. Tunisia’s Roman era is also present in a collection of marble statues of Roman Gods and Emperors. The Islamic area displays ceramics and the famous work, the Blue Qur’an of Kairouan. The Libyco-Punic Department contains important relics such as the votive stele of a priest carrying a child. There is also a marble bust of Aphrodite from a ship excavation, so the Greeks are represented as well.

The Bardo National Museum has undergone significant renovation to better display its artifacts and artwork to make it a better experience for visitors, like you.
