About Golden Gate

Once you’re in the capital city of Kyiv, there is so much to do and so much to see. A well-deserved honor given to the city, it is jam-packed with the rich heritage and culture of Ukraine. Be prepared to be knocked off your feet as you visit one tourist attraction after another. Add one more name to your bucket list, that of the Golden Gate.

In the 11th Century fortifications of Kyiv, the Golden Gate was the main entrance to the city. It was erected by Yaroslav the Wise. The structure’s name was inspired by the Golden Gate of Constantinople. In the Middle Ages, however, the structure of the gate was dismantled, leaving behind a ghost of its existence. At the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv, in 1982, the Golden Gate was restored and rebuilt as part of the celebrations.

A popular tourist attraction, the edifice that we see in current times, is a mix of the traditional stone and modern pavilions. More so, a statue of Yaroslav the Wise was also added to the park surrounding the gate. A metro station has been constructed close to the Golden Gate, for ease of convenience. Very few structures, like the Golden Gate, of Kyiv Rus, are present in our time today. Which is why it has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage.
