About Khortytsia National Park

Come to the biggest island on the Dnieper River and walk on a foundation that is believed to be older than time itself! The geographical foundation of Khortytsia National Park is made of Precambrian stones, which is approximately 2.5 million years old! You don’t want to miss out on this spectacular park and its age-old history.

A cherry on top of the cake would be that, in 2007, the national reserve Khortytsia was recognized as one of the “Seven Wonders of Ukraine.” Located in the Zaporizhia region, the Khortytsia National Park is a unique blend of the natural and historical complex of Khortytsia.

Visitors from across the globe flock to the Khortytsia National Park to witness the wide variety of plants, and animals that inhabit the island. In spite of being located in the center of the city, the island houses 140 species of birds, 18 species of mammals, 7 species of reptiles, and 4 species of amphibians. The island boasts of its own share of legends. One such legend is that in a cave called “Zmieva” meaning “one of a snake,” there lived a 12-headed snake.

In 2009, a new sight appeared in the Khortytsia National Park - the historic-cultural complex, “Zaporizhian Sich.” This has gained immense popularity and is considered to have become one of the island’s main attractions. A reconstruction of an old Cossack fortress, it takes one back to the Sich time of 16th to 18th centuries. Tourists thoroughly enjoy the horse theater as well, called the Zaporizhian Cossacks. Come and watch Cossacks showcase their horsemanship in theatrical performances, on improvised stages. If you’re lucky you can even attend a ceremony of initiation in the Cossack tribe.
