About Parque Nacional do Iguaçu

Parque Nacional do Iguaçu, or Iguaçu National Park is best known for the world’s largest waterfalls within its borders. But it is more than just the massive waterfalls or the river running through it. The park covers just shy of 458,000 acres of area, of which 300 kilometres (190 miles) are bordered by water.

Only about .3% of the total area of the park is open to visitors. That’s where you’ll find access to the waterfalls, the Visitors’ Centre, the Dumont Statue, and concessions. Be sure to see the Macuco Waterfall, the Black Well or Poço Preto. The rest of the park is home to rare and endangered wildlife like the giant otter and anteater.

The park’s geomorphic attributes and attractions were all created by volcanic eruptions dating back hundreds of millions of years. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and is a centre for biodiversity conservation.

  • You do need a visa for Brazil, but it can be obtained online an e-visa that you print at home, and it costs about $40. Apply at least a couple of weeks before your departure.
  • If you are taking a boat ride, so be aware that you will get absolutely soaked. The staff will give you a large waterproof bag to put your things in, but they don’t give you a poncho.
  • Please carry clothes and keep them in the dry bag, along with your shoes.
  • Please follow safety rules.
  • As the food here is overpriced you can bring your own food, If you do want to eat in the park, there is a cafeteria and a fancier restaurant that might have more, but they will be overpriced.
