The story of the Mercado Central de Belo Horizonte is one of determination and grit. The Mayor of Belo Horizonte founded the market in 1929. It was run in an open area with stalls for 35 years. The new administration wanted to sell the property for development. The founding mayor purchased the land from the city in 1964, under the stipulation a covered market would be built in its place within five years. If he didn’t build, he would have to return the property to the city. With 15 days to go before the deadline the land still stood empty. Imagine City Hall’s surprise when at deadline four contractors had finished the 14,000 square metre building.
Whether open-air stalls or under a roof, the Central Market still features food and drink. This is the place to go when shopping for handicrafts, holistic medicines, toys, and clothing. For a true Brazilian flavour, there are miners telling stories of Belo Horizonte’s history in every corner.
