The city of Crete is a bustling place for tourists across the globe, and rightfully so. There is something for everyone in this city. The next tourist attraction on our list is for those who are somewhat physically fit. The Samariá Gorge is a perfect combination of downhill hiking, swimming, picnic under the shade of canopy trees, and the gorgeous view of the Mediterranean Sea. Does it get any better than this?
This Gorge is in the Samariá National Park. There is a trail running from Xylóskalo trailhead, in the White Mountains right to the Ayia Rouméli village. You will even cross the long-abandoned village of Samariá and the Osia Maria Church of the 14th Century.
If you are lucky then you will witness an endangered species of goat known as kri-kri. That’s not all. The national park houses more than 450 species of endangered animals and birds, out of which 70 are natives of the Crete region. If you are in no mood for physical activity then you can rent a boat and explore the crystal-clear water and seabed of the Mediterranean Sea. You are spoilt for choice here.
Daily buses are available from Chania to the head of the gorge, called Xyloskalo. Take the bus "OMALOS", that departs from Chania Central Bus Station at 07:45 and 8:45; the fare for a round trip is €15.70.
Tourists usually walk the gorge from Xylóskalo, in Omalos, to Agia Roumeli.
You can also trek through the gorge, that is12.8 km long.
