About Maracanã Football Stadium

Rio de Janeiro is known for many sights, including the Maracanã Football Stadium. It is the largest stadium in Brazil and the second-largest in South America.

When it opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup, Brazil lost to Uruguay in front of 199,854 fans. Until terraces replaced seats more than 25 occasions saw more than 150,000 fans and hundreds more with crowds of 100,000 or more. It has hosted the Pan American Games, FIFA Confederations Cup, World Cup, Summer Olympics, and Paralympics.

Although primarily used for sporting events the Maracanã has also played host to many concerts. The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Sting, Madonna, and KISS have all graced the stage to adoring fans. These were not to be outdone by Pope John Paul II, Jimmy Swaggart, and Billy Graham who have delivered mass or sermons at the stadium.
