About Preah Monivong Bokor National Park

In the Dâmrei Mountains of Cambodia, you will find the Preah Monivong Bokor National Park. This ASEAN Heritage Park covers 1,423.17 square-kilometres (549.5 sq mi).

The park was named after King Sisowath Monivong. He visited the area in the mountains and had a Buddhist temple constructed there in 1924. He died in the park 17 years later. The Buddhist temple isn’t the only spiritual place in Preah Monivong Bokor. In 1928 the French colonialists built a Catholic church, which is unusual in Cambodia.

Preah Monivong Bokor is known for the Bokor Hill Station where those same French colonialists settled in 1921. It is perhaps better known for the Lok Yeay Mao status. It is the tallest statue dedicated to the heroine of Cambodian Buddhism in the country.

Tips

  • Go to the local wet markets in Kampot and buy some fresh prawn and crabs, as well as one of those bottled chili sauces. Bring it to one of the cooking stations and get them to boil the prawns and crabs for you on the spot for $2.50.
  • You can either sit by the waterfall/river and eat the food, or there is a restaurant there that you can also eat in (but you will need to buy some food to use the tables... which isn't expensive at all.
  • There is also a point where you will be driving INTO the clouds, which is an amazing but scary experience in itself, because you can't see what's in front of you.
  • At Bokor Mountain, you can visit the waterfall. You can stand atop the waterfall, which has an amazing scenery.
  • Remember to bring a jacket and wear long pants! It is very cold on the mountain. Felt like less than 15 degrees celsius.
  •  Don't rush. Take your time and enjoy the views!
  • Wear slippers, but bring shoes. Some of the climbs will be comfortable with shoes.
  • Carry enough cash.
