About São Paulo Museum of Art

Art museums can sometimes look stuffy and foreboding on the outside. Not so the São Paulo Museum of Art or Museu de Arte de São Paulo. The building itself is a work of art. The 10,000 square metre (110,000 square feet) glass building appears to be almost suspended from its concrete supports with open space underneath it. Over 8,000 works of art are suspended from the ceilings of the two storeys inside. Concrete blocks, black rubber, and flagstone floors add to the unique structure.

This modern museum is best-known for its European and Brazilian art. Among the largest collection of Western art in Latin America, you’ll find French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and German masters. There’s no need to travel to Paris to see a Cézanne or Monet, to Spain for a Goya or El Greco, or Germany for a Holbein the Younger. You’ll find them all in Brazil with Greek, Egyptian, and African arts.

At the São Paulo Museum of Art, there is also one of the largest art libraries in Brazil, photo, film, and video galleries, a restaurant, and gift shop.
