About Belfast Castle

The current Belfast Castle is actually the second of its name. The first was built in the 12th century by the Normans in the heart of the city. It was destroyed by fire in 1708.  This newer home was built by the Marquess of Donegall in 1811 in the Scottish Balmoral style. The Earl of Shaftesbury completed construction in 1870. It sits on the hillside on the edge of Cavehill Country Park.

The castle was gifted to the City of Belfast in 1934. In 1988 Belfast Castle was opened to the public. The castle is now a popular location for weddings, private dining, and conferences.

Tourists will enjoy the visitor center and antique shop. Don’t miss the exhibition on the history of the castle, park, and folklore on the lower floor and to grab a bite at the Cellar Restaurant.
