The Belfast Zoo is one of the few local government-funded zoos in Ireland and the UK. It opened in 1934 on the former Bellevue Gardens at the end of the tram line. Because of the distance from the main city, it is perfectly situated for the animals it protects.
The 55-acre zoo houses more than 140 species and 1,200 animals. Most of the animals are under threat of extinction. Although it is a fantastic place to take the wee ones while on vacation, it is also a place of learning. The Belfast Zoo participates in conserving wildlife through international breeding programs. They protect endangered species and promote active involvement through training and research.
The Belfast Zoo has a long shared memory with the locals. Stories and photographs of a woman who cared for the zoo’s first baby elephant were on display for the zoo’s 75th anniversary. Visitors to the zoo are encouraged to share their personal memories.
