About O'Brien's Tower

O’Brien’s Tower stands atop the Cliffs of Moher with fantastic views over its crenelated platform. Go on a sunny day to see the Aran Islands and Twelve Bens from the cliffs.

The tower has had many uses since its construction in 1835. There are almost as many reasons why it was built.

The flagstone tower was named after Cornelius O’Brien, the landlord, and philanthropist who built it. He was an MP for County Clare, a proctor, magistrate, and lawyer. Some say that he built the tower to impress his lady friends. Others say he built it for visitors to the Cliffs of Moher. The construction would bring work to his constituents, create jobs, and increase tourism to the area.

O’Brien’s Tower has been a tea house, an observation deck, gift shop, and a gallery. It is one of the last monuments of a remarkable man.
