About Newgrange

When a place is older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, it is easy to understand the myths and legends it creates. Newgrange, part of the Brú na Bóinne, is a vast circular mount covering passages and chambers built during the Neolithic period in County Meath.

Like Stonehenge, no one can agree what Newgrange was used for. It is said that it was home to the Gods and had religious significance. The entrance and passageways align with the winter solstice. Whatever its original purpose, it was used as a tomb. Passages and chambers containing human bones and funeral offerings were discovered during an excavation in the 17th century.

Over the millennia Newgrange became overgrown, but through excavation and restoration efforts it may look like it did 5,200 years ago. An estimated 200,000 tonnes of stone including white quartz cobblestone and kerbstone went into its construction, with much of it decorated in megalithic art.

If you wonder at how the pyramids were built, you will marvel at the organization it would have taken to create Newgrange. Come and be mystified.
