About Zoo Taiping

Situated near the foot of the Larut Hill in the Taiping Lake GardensSet up in 1961, the Taiping zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the country. The area is set against a backdrop of lakes, streams, and flowers, setting itself apart by showcasing the natural untouched beauty of Taiping. The Taiping Zoo is also called the Taman Mergastua Sultan Idris Shah and is a one of its kind experience in the Northern Peninsular of Malaysia. This whopping 34-acre territory is home to about 1,300 animals of 180 species. Boasting of a fauna that includes orangutans, giraffes, elephants, deer, night heron, its no wonder the zoo takes pride and advertises most about their night safaris when the wild likes to come out to play. The zoo displays nocturnal animals in natural-like settings for the benefit of the visitors. You don’t want to miss out on this experience suited for families and group vacations.

Tips

  • Come in the morning or later in the day, as coming in just after noon means you'll probably find the big cats resting inside the cave.
  • Try to bring along an umbrella as Taiping and Zoo Taiping is mostly known as a wet place (means that at any time it will start raining)...
  • If you have a Taiping (as stated in the IC) born person going to the zoo with you, ask him/her to buy the tickets as all Taiping residents get a 50% discount on ticket price.
  • Tip for those going for the night safari: walk instead of taking the trams as you can see more stuff up close and go at your own pace.
  •  It is HUMID. Bring water along with you on your walk (which can be bought at a kiosk right after the ticketed entrance) and a fan, if you have one.
  • Have insect repellent, especially for the children. Malaysia's forests are tropical rainforests, after all, so be well prepared for all manners of insects and mosquitoes.
  •  If you intend to walk the trails, arrive early when they open at 8 am, as the grounds are rather large and the Zoo closes at midnight, which gives you only 4 hours of meandering time.
