About Semenggoh Nature Reserve

Malaysia is extremely proud of its natural beauty and rightfully so, this country blessed with dense forests, natural ponds, lakes, rushing rivers and gradually dipping and rising hill ranges is a hotspot for tourists. One such spectacular place is the Semenggoh Nature Reserve in Siburan, Sarawak an organisation dedicated to the preservation and protection of orangutans. The amazing wardens of this place have been training young orangutans who were orphaned or escaped from captivity how to survive in the wild, for the past two decades. The Semenggoh Nature Reserve continues to remain the home of breeding young orangutans and their offspring. However, the initiative has been moved to the Matang Wildlife Center. Try to visit the reserve during feeding time. You will be amazed at the grace and beauty of these creatures as they swing from branch to branch all around you. It's one thing to get in touch with nature and another to experience animals in their natural habitats, living out their daily lives. A way to give back to the orangutans who in the past were exploited by animal trading and captivity, the reserve has been extremely successful in achieving its objectives more so that the surrounding forest reserves have reported an increased number in healthy orangutan families

Tips

  • The time of year is important. During the “fruiting season,” roughly November to March, fruit is abundant in the forest, and the orangutans are much less likely to show up at the feeding station. That doesn’t mean that you won’t see any, but you’re likely to see fewer and maybe none at all.
  • The weather matters. If it’s raining, the odds of seeing orangutans go way down.
  • Bring mosquito repellent.
  • Talk to the rangers. Some of them have been there a long time, and they’re quite knowledgeable and happy to talk with you and answer questions. You won’t get that opportunity many times in your life. Take advantage of it.
  • When booking a Grab car, select on the map the parking lot outside the main entrance because the cab driver won't go further, you will save a few RM. Then you will have to walk an easy path for 15-20min to the feeding platform. In the meantime, because the feeding is scheduled only from 9 to 10 am and 3 to 4 pm, you can enjoy the gallery or the crocodiles' enclosure.
  • Get your ticket at the counter then get your grab to drive you in. Otherwise, it would be a good 20min walk uphill.
  • There is a food court just around the corner of the bus stop with delicious local food.
