About Jawatha Mosque

The Jawatha Mosque in Al-Kalibiyah is the first mosque built in Eastern Arabia. The four original towers have been repaired, and electricity brought to the building.

In your visit, you will feel the power and importance it once held. It was built by the Bani Abd al-Qays tribe who lived there in the 7th century. It was where the second Friday prayers in Islam were offered after the Prophet’s Mosque [link to other attraction]. Jawatha Mosque is a small simple building with arched doorways and carpeted floors.

Legend has it that the Jawatha Mosque is where the Black Stone was kept when it was stolen from Mecca. It is an important Islamic relic said to date back to Adam and Eve. It fell from the heavens as a sign to them to build an altar.

Prayers are still held regularly here, despite the condition it is currently in. It is constantly under renovation as the sands continue to cover it.
