Who doesn’t love witnessing the antics of penguins in their natural habitat? Magdalena Island and Marta Island in the Strait of Magellan are where you’ll find the Monumento Natural Los Pingüinos or Los Pingüinos Natural Monument. It is the largest penguin colony south of Chile. In fact, the penguins are the only inhabitants of the islands.
There are conflicting views on eco-tourism. Chile is determined to protect the natural environment of the penguins, but the locations play a roll in how humans can build a relationship with the environment. Los Pingüinos was founded in 1966 to protect the area for breeding penguins, and is only closed during breeding season or when the penguins are away during the winter.
Let your “happy feet” bring you to Magdalena Island. Learn about the initiative in the museum and visit the lighthouse on Magdalena Island for a view over the penguin population.
A visit to Los Pingüinos Natural Monument is now one of the most popular day trips from Punta Arenas. From the capital of Chile’s southernmost region, it’s a 50-minute ferry ride through the Strait of Magellan to reach the islands.
