The Museo de Sitio Castillo de Niebla is a museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Chilean Corral Bay. Also known as the Museo de Sitio Fuerte Niebla, it was declared a National Monument in 1950.
The museum is located in the Castillo de Niebla, a fort built finally constructed in 1810. The fort was subsequently lost to the English in 1820, but its stone walls protected the Bay from pirates and invading enemies.
The Museo de Sitio is an open-air museum where visitors may wander the fort at their leisure. Within the main building are collections of photographs by Gilberto Provoste and sculptures by Mariana Matthews. Provoste took pictures of the local inhabitants and daily life, along with festivals and landscapes. Matthews portrays images of religious figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Her collection is called the “Silent Saints” and uses unique wooden sculptures with carved and painted faces, hands, and feet. The rest of the figures are covered in plaster and glued fabric. All sculptures were created using wood from the native forests such as laurel, cypress, olive, and plum.
