The Chinese characters, An (雁: goose), Ap (鴨: duck), and Ji (池: pond) together form the Anapji, which was the name given by the Joseon dynasty to Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. This was a palace and pleasure built by King Munmu in the 14th year of his reign (661-681) to commemorate the unification of the Korean peninsula under the Silla dynasty. Here, lotus flowers bloomed on a sea-shaped pond, birds sang their sweet songs and small mountains were built inside the palace walls and rare animals played hide and seek with the kings and the queens. Exotic isn't it? Lost and discovered, today, Anapji pond rewards its visitors with stunning night views. Its history is carefully preserved in the trinkets, and gold paraphernalia in the 'Wolji Hall' of the Gyeongju National Museum. This is Silla art of landscaping at its best.
