Sometimes glaciers create the most beautiful lakes, like Lake Llanquihue in the Lake District of southern Chile. The second-largest lake in Chile at almost 860 square kilometres (330 sq mi) has a form much like a fan, created during the Quaternary glaciations.
Lake Llanquihue is an ideal place to fish. Grab your equipment, get on a boat, and spend a leisurely day catching rainbow trout or coho salmon. You can also sit back and let a sailboat take you across the windy waters.
Unlike other lakes, its shores are black sand. Go for a hike to experience the snow-capped Osorno Volcano, the ice caves, or Petrohué Falls which cascade down sluices created by lava. Puerto Varas on the southwest shore features a church with three red and white towers.
For a perfect day of kicking back or exploring, Lake Llanquihue is the place to be.
