About Casa de Isla Negra

The Casa de Isla Negra is a house almost as interesting as its former owner, Pablo Neruda.

Pablo Neruda was a Chilean poet, politician, and diplomat. Born Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, he held appointments with various countries and once served as a Senator for the Chilean Communist Party. In 1948 Neruda fled Chile for Argentina, only to return after he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. President Salvador Allende asked him to read at the national stadium to an audience of 70,000 people. Not bad for an outlaw!
Casa de Isla Negra was his favourite house and a source of inspiration for his writing. Although not itself an island, the house is nautically themed. The construction itself looks like a ship and every room has items related to the sea, including ships in bottles, shells, maps, and figureheads.

He wanted to use his house as a writers’ meeting place, and so the house is now a writer’s home museum managed by the Pablo Neruda Foundation.
