About El Tatio

The largest field of geysers in the southern hemisphere and the third-largest in the world is El Tatio in Chile. This geothermal field holds approximately 8% of the world’s geysers. In height, only the geysers in Yellowstone Park in the United States and Dolina Geizerov in Russia are taller. Some of the geysers have names, such as Vega Rinconada, Terrace Geyser, El Cobreloa, El Cobresal, and El Jefe (The Boss).

Depending on who you ask, El Tatio can mean “oven.” They may be heated by the supereruptions of the Altiplano-Puna volcanoes. El Tatio covers roughly 30 square kilometres (12 sq mi) and is known for its “fumaroles”, steam vents or “soffioni”, mud pots, sinter deposits, and steaming soil. The sinter deposits make for some interesting formations around the geysers in the shape of mounds, cones, crusts, and shells.

Geysers, and hot springs, and volcanoes, oh wow!
