About Great Temple of Ramses II

The Great Temple of Ramses II is the main temple in the Abu Simbel complex. Carved by hand out of a mountain front on the Nile during 1244 BC. This temple contains four giant statues of the pharaoh Ramses seated on the throne. Alongside these, there are some smaller statues of Ramses' wife Nefertiti, his mother and his two sons and six daughters. There is also a line of 22 baboon statues along the bottom of the walls.  The temple is also located on the banks of Lake Nasser. It was originally built to commemorate Ramses' war conquest over Hittites in the Battle of Kadesh.  Colloquially, the temples were also called the Temple of Ramesses- Meryamun, which translates to "Ramesses, God Amun's beloved."
