We like big things. The biggest mountains, the biggest oceans, the biggest statues, and even the world’s biggest cave. The Sơn Đoòng Cave, found in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, has the largest-known passage in the world by volume. The name means “cave of the mountain river”. It is 3 miles long, over 650 feet high, and almost 500 feet wide.
Some of the world’s largest stalagmites are located in Hang Son Doong. The tallest is 210 feet. The cave also has an underground river and was formed between 2 and 5 million years ago. It hasn’t been open to the public that long, only since 2013.
If you are planning a trip to Vietnam, be sure to book your expedition in advance. For security purposes, tours and research groups may only access the cave through one adventure tour company. Permits are limited and are only available in the spring and summer months. When the heavy rains in the fall hit, the cave becomes almost completely submerged.
