About Itsukushima-jinja

This world-renowned attraction doesn’t need any introduction. It is famous for its iconic “floating” torii gate. The Itsukushima-Jinja or Itsukushima Shrine and its torii gate are built over water. During high tides, it appears that the shrine and its gate are miraculously floating in the sea! What a beautiful sight to behold.

The Miyajima island or “shrine island” houses the shrine. The island was formerly known as Itsukushima, from which the shrine received its name. Ensure that you pay a visit to this shrine on your next trip to Japan. The shrine houses various buildings including the main hall, a prayer hall, and a Noh theatre stage. This beautiful theatre stage is supported by pillars above the sea and connected by boardwalks! It is a sight for sore eyes!

Must See

  • The highlight of the shrine is the O-Torii (enormous torii). It appears to be floating on the sea during high tide. And lo and behold! At the time of low tide, you can directly walk to the structure.
  • There are several other shrines and stages around the main shrine that are connected via a 275m long corridor.
  • You can also enjoy the sight of freewheeling monkeys and deer.
