About Abisko National Park

The Abisko National Park is the crowning jewel of Lapland, Sweden. Not only is the park a hotspot for tourists, lovers of nature and hikers, it also attracts a lot of those with a scientific bent of mind. This is further fortified by the Abisko Scientific Research Station located inside the park. The lakes and river within the park will leave you in awe, as will the variety of vegetation and wildlife. The activities in the park will change as per the season. However, if you are there during the Northern Lights season, definitely head to the Abisko Aurora Sky Station at night for the world's best view of the Northern lights, along with a spectacular gourmet meal. With the right gear for the cold, you can also enjoy activities such as Husky sled rides, snowboarding, and sledding. Also, enjoy the bonfires and cinnamon buns with your local guides in the park. During summer, be sure to see the midnight sun. The famous hiking trail Kungsleden also ends here at this park.

Tips

  • In the national park there is a naturum visitor centre with exhibits, travel tips and information about the mountains’ nature and culture. WCs and free parking are available here for visitors.
  • Don't pitch a tent in the national park anywhere except on designated campsites (by the tourist station, Nissonjohka and the Abiskojaure cabins). There are strict rules in the park with respect to this.
  • Don't gather or dig up plants; destroy or damage natural objects or the ground. You can harm the natural surroundings or get into a lot of trouble for this.
  • Don't kill or capture fauna in the national park. They are all protected species and it is illegal to do so.
  • Don't visit the bird sanctuary in the Ábeskoeatnus delta area from May 1 to July 31, as it is shut during that time.
  • You can bring dogs into the park from January 1 until April 30 if they are on a leash. Throughout the year you are allowed to have leashed dogs on roads and marked trails as well as in the immediate vicinity of the Abisko Tourist station and the Ábeskojávri cabins.
  • You can gather edible mushrooms and berries. They are delicious and give you an idea of the wild fruits of this region.
  • Mosquitoes and gnats are present during part of the summer, especially in the mountain birch forest. It’s a good idea to bring along mosquito repellent.
