About Kalmar Castle

Kalmar Castle is a nearly 800-year-old castle, and due to its location, it was called the "key to the kingdom" in its heyday. In 1397, it was at this castle that the Kalmar Union was signed, which unified the kingdoms of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. It is the most painstakingly well-preserved Nordic Renaissance Castle. The architecture of the castle itself is worth seeing, and you can easily spend a few hours walking through the castle and its grounds. If you visit in the morning, be sure to see the reflection of the castle in the water body surrounding it. You will often find guides dressed in period costumes to increase engagement. Do walk through the Dining Hall to see the elaborate setup on how the food was consumed during the time when the castle was used as a residence. The exhibition halls also have touring exhibits that change depending on the time of the year when you visit it.

Tips

  • Not all public areas of Kalmar Castle are available for a visit with a wheelchair, due to the architecture of the building.
  • No dogs are allowed inside the castle itself, with the exception of guide dogs, according to the castle rules.
  • Because of the castle's historical and sensitive environments, and in order not to hinder evacuation, it is not allowed to bring strollers or baby carriages inside.
  • If you require a hearing aid, use a traditional hearing loop in the Green Hall.
  • If you drive down in your own car, there is free parking available at a 10 to 15-minute walk, that passes through a church and graveyard.
  • Occasional exhibitions are held at the castle. Don't miss these as they are unique and are very informative.
  • The prison tour can be a little scary for little children, so you can avoid taking them to that part of the castle.
  • This is a great attraction for children. During summertime, there are lots of activities for them, including dressing up as knights, princes/princesses or jesters, sword fighting, performances, crafting, etc. In the end, even get to participate in a theatrical knighting ceremony.
