About Aachener Dom

Aachener Dom or Aachen Cathedral is also known as the Cathedral of Aix-la-Chapelle. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit this awe-inspiring cathedral and imagine yourself back in the time of Charlemagne, who ordered the construction of the cathedral, and who was buried there after death. Charlemagne’s royal throne is still found in Aachener Dom’s Palatine Chapel. The Cathedral and Charlemagne’s throne have seen the coronation of 31 German kings and 12 German queens. The Cathedral’s Marienschrein, or Shrine of St. Mary, has protected important Christian relics since 1239: Mary’s cloak as well as the baby Jesus’ swaddling clothes, the beheading cloth of St. John the Baptist, and Christ’s loincloth. These relics are shown to the public only every seven years, and, since the middle ages faithful from around the world have been making the pilgrimage to Aachener Dom to view these holy relics.
