About River Kwai Bridge

If you’ve seen the movie, you would be familiar with the Bridge on the River Kwai. The bridge crosses the Kwai River, originally built to transport cargo between Thailand and Myanmar (Burma) to India. The River Kwai Bridge was constructed by POWs and Asian slaves in highly unsavory conditions. Construction began in October of 1942 and took a year to complete. Because of the difficult terrain, thousands of workers died. After all that work and loss of lives, the Allied Forces bombed the bridge in November 1944.

The two central sections of the bridge have been restored. You can take the train that runs across its tracks, but visitors to the Bridge River Kwai can cross on foot by taking the walkway on the side platform. The perfect way to cross the bridge for those exceptional photos of the iron structure and the river below.

How to reach

By train:

Take the train line 257 or 259 from River Kwai Bridge to Kanchanaburi. The journey takes 7 minutes and covers 2.9 km, at the cost of 250 THB.

Tips

  • The bridge has steel plates over the ties to make it easy to walk over the span.
  • There are also viewing platforms between the trestles to give you a view of the river as well as to give you a place to get out of the way if you're on the bridge when a train comes.
  • Remember to stand aside for the passenger trains when one comes along since there is a speed restriction for trains and they'll be forced to hoot at you.
  • You will have to pay for everything here, including the toilets.
  • It can get extremely crowded, so please be careful that you don't shove.
  • Try to see the movie 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' first, as it will greatly enrich your experience.
