More than just a sumptuous chocolate and cherry cake, Germany’s Black Forest is an outdoor-enthusiast’s playground. It is also one of the best-known areas of Germany. Bordered by the Rhine Valley, Baden-Baden and the Swiss border, the Black Forest is replete with opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, downhill and Nordic skiing, as well as water sports, depending on the season. Baden-Baden offers thermal baths and many popular spa resorts. The entire Black Forest covers and area about 150 km long and about 50 km wide. The area is densely forested with hardwood trees, from which Germany’s famous cuckoo clocks are made. The dense forest (and not the chocolate cake) is where the Black Forest takes its name. |
