About Chiang Mai Night Bazaar

Shopping, like no other, is what you’ll find in Chiang Mai, Thailand. There are night markets are all over the city, but the main one is at the corner of Chang Khlan Road and Loi Khro Road.

Get your non-stop-shop on between 6:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Just like the stars the stalls come out when the sun sets. You’ll find everything from handmade jewelry, toys, handicrafts, clothing, and vendors who do portrait paintings. Most of the stall owners are Thai, so prepare yourself for hundreds of vendors with the widest selection of one-of-a-kind souvenirs to take home.

You may want to start at one end and work your way back down the other to see what everyone has on offer. You may also want to buy everything in sight. Take your time, have a snack, and take in the full experience.

How to reach

By public transport:

Take tuk-tuks or red songthaews which drop you off at the Night Bazaar. The price can be between 50 to 75 THB, depending on the bargained price. The distance depends on the route the tuk-tuks or red songthaews decide to take.

Tips

  • Don't forget to peek down the little sois (alleyways) and arcades along the way. You might just spot some unique shops there.
  • Due to the sheer volume of visitors, depending on when you arrive, you’ll likely be sharing space with large clusters of slow-moving people—patience is essential if you want to avoid frustration.
  • While you browse, remember to bargain if you see something you want to buy. It is an expected part of the shopping culture here.
  • It’s also much easier to have Thai baht on hand if you plan to make any purchases since the majority of vendors likely won’t be able to give you change in your local currency.
  • When buying music or movies make sure you test the disc before buying, since this is all knock-off material.
  • When haggling, remember to smile and be light hearted and friendly. A good joke and some patience will get you a lot farther than hardball tactics. Although haggling and getting a good deal is all part of the fun of the market, don't forget that most of these vendors make very little and ten THB means a lot to them.
  • If you're a serious bargain hunter you might want to try being the early bird, since it only gets more crowded later on.
