About Wolf's Lair

Adolf Hitler’s top-secret Wolf’s Lair was one of the Führer’s headquarters in Gierłoż. It was built in the woods by Organisation Todt as part of Operation Barbarossa. It is in this location that Hitler would plot his invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. He spent half of the Second World War here.

Much of the barracks and bunkers were destroyed by the Germans themselves. That doesn’t stop visitors from venturing into the Mazurian forest to see where Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg tried to assassinate Hitler. Hitler’s bunker was, of course, the largest, but even it is an empty shell. The concrete towers and walkways may have become overgrown with moss and ferns, but nature cannot hide the history of the place.

Of the original 80 buildings and structures, only the former headquarters remains. It’s a small hotel and restaurant where you can stay and collect your thoughts and recollect the horrors of the place

Tips

  • Get a guide. It costs around 80 PLN per group of up to 10 people. It's a good idea since you won't learn anything if you go on your own, as there isn't almost any explanation about the place.
  • It is advisable to take your own vehicle since the museum is a bit remote.
  • The zone south of the main one can be accessed for free at any time, but there is no dedicated car park.
  • It is also possible to stay overnight right at the Wolfschanze: there's a basic hotel by the car park on the premises.
  • There are three routes mentioned in the guidebooks which you can take to explore the area : the 'Yellow' route, estimated to take 45 minutes, which takes in the small exhibition, the monuments, a few of the bunkers, and the "highlight" of bunker No. 13, i.e. Hitler's bunker, the longer 60-minute 'Red' route also takes in General Keitel's and Goering's giant bunkers, the 'Blue' route is an additional 50-minute route that also takes you through the freely accessible zone south of the road.
  • It is advisable to use caution when exploring the bunkers since some have unstable dilapidated structure.
  • Be sure to carry flashlights while going through bunkers since most have empty dark rooms and corridors.
